Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that affects one or more limbs. It is characterized by severe pain, swelling, changes in skin colour and temperature, and limited movement. CRPS can develop after an injury, such as a fracture or sprain, but it can also occur after a stroke, heart attack, or other medical event.

The exact cause of CRPS is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a dysfunction of the nervous system. This dysfunction can lead to a number of changes in the affected limb, including:

  • Increased blood flow
  • Inflammation
  • Changes in nerve signalling

CRPS can be a very debilitating condition. The pain can be so severe that it makes it difficult to perform everyday activities. The swelling and changes in skin colour and temperature can make the affected limb look discoloured and swollen. The limited movement can make it difficult to use the affected limb.

There is no cure for CRPS, but there are treatments that can help to manage the pain and improve function. Treatment typically involves a combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy, medication, and nerve blocks.

Here are some of the most common symptoms of CRPS:

  • Severe pain in the affected limb
  • Swelling in the affected limb
  • Changes in skin colour and temperature in the affected limb
  • Limited movement in the affected limb
  • Sensitivity to touch in the affected limb
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Depression

CRPS can be a very challenging condition to live with, but there are resources available to help. If you have been diagnosed with CRPS, talk to your doctor about treatment options and support resources.
